Mike Rowe of The Discovery Channel’s Dirty Jobs confesses that he “got a lot wrong” on the show. In this presentation from TED Talks, he tells a story about working with sheep that made me squirm so be foreworn if you’re squeemish. But his message is a good one. Work, physical work, is not rightfully appreciated by the public, the media or Hollywood. He argues that we need to remember the forgotten benefits of work — that skilled manual labor really ~makes~ things we need. More than that, skilled labor , aka, infrastructure jobs, are going to help all of us get out of the current depression recession. It’s a brilliant 20 minutes and makes me want to watch more of his show.
